Q: How do I install KingKanji on my PalmOS device?
Unzip KingKanjiPalm60.zip and use the PalmOS Install Tool to put all of the files with PRC or PDB extensions on the PalmOS device. The Install Tool should be available from the Windows Start Menu in the same submenu as HotSync. More advanced installation instructions are provided in the Install.html file included in the zip file.

Q: How do I install KingKanji on my PocketPC?
Run KingKanjiPktPC60.exe and follow the instructions. A batch file will start and the first installer launched will place the lesson editor (only available for Windows 2000 and XP) and help file on the PC. Once it is finished, press any key in the DOS command window running the batch file to start the PocketPC installation. The second installer will load KingKanji on the PocketPC.

Q: Where is the Windows Lesson Editor? It doesn't seem to be installed.
It is only installed on Windows 2000 and XP (i.e., not available for 98/ME). The PocketPC self-extracting zip file will automatically install it for those operating systems. The zip file for the PalmOS creates a subdirectory titled "WinToolsSetup" that contains the setup file setup.exe. Run this file to install. It will also install the utility to create PalmOS databases from lesson files. This utility is available for all versions of Windows.

Q: I have installed KingKanji but no lesson is loaded. How do I load a lesson?
You need to select File-Open... from the KingKanji menu. For the PalmOS, the menu is normally hidden and can be displayed by pressing the Application Menu button in the lower-left corner of the silk screened graffiti area.

Q: How do I install the additional lessons?
Lessons for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and from the popular kanji and Japanese books Remembering the Kanji (RTK), A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters (GRJC), Yookoso! Getting Started with Contemporary Japanese (Yookoso) are installed to the "Cards" subdirectory for the PC tools installation (on the PC). For the Palm, just install the PDB file for the lessons you want using the PalmOS Install Tool. For the PocketPC, the files with the KF extension should be copied to the "My Documents" directory of the PocketPC.

Q: How do I get the animated stroke order to display?
Simply tap the kanji or kana with the stylus. The longer the stylus is held down, the slower the animation. Note that some characters do not have animation and will have an 'X' displayed just below and to the left. No animation will appear when these characters are tapped.

Q: The trial period ended too soon, why?
The most likely cause is changing the system time on the device.

Q: Can the trial period be extended?
There is no way to extend the trial period without cold-booting (i.e., erasing all contents) the device. Only registering will remove the expiration dialog. If you still wish to evaluate KingKanji, then one option is to install the Windows version on your PC. This will not change the behavior on the PDA, but will allow you to evaluate KingKanji in Windows.

Q: Why doesn't my registration code work?
An invalid registration code has never been release. One of the characters is being misinterpreted. The best way to verify is to copy the code into Windows Notepad or similar program and change the font to Times Roman or other serif font. It will help to distinguish between capital letter 'i's and numeral ones and capital 'O's and numeral zeroes.

Addendum: some codes contain '<' or '>' characters and do not work on Palm devices because they do not use standard ASCII characters for them. Please send an email to support@gakusoft.com to receive a new code. Windows and PocketPCs are OK.

Q: I have found a lesson or stroke order error. Will you fix it?
Yes, please double check that their really is an error and send the error report to support@gakusoft.com.
